The opening rounds of the 2004 BTRA British Truck Racing Championship attracted an encouraging entry of 15 competitors to Pembrey Circuit in south Wales last weekend (April 9/10).
Stuart Oliver set the pace in the Saturday practice session – securing pole position with a time of 1m.14.663 secs (70.20mph). This was 3.493 seconds quicker than the best lap his nearest rival (Ross Garrett) could manage.
From the rolling start of the Saturday race Oliver quickly took the advantage to head the field into turn one with Garrett (Foden) close behind. The rest of the field got rather tangled up at the first hairpin corner – with Steve Horne (ERF) losing a lot of places while David Jenkins (Sisu) was rapidly making up time after starting from the back of the grid.
Out in front Oliver was extracting full performance from the Castrol MAN to claim the fastest lap of the race (1m.15.395s.) as he eased away from Garrett at a rate of nearly three seconds a lap. At the chequered flag the winning margin was a massive 34 seconds with Garrett taking the runner-up spot ahead of Horne who had recovered a lot of lost ground to take the final podium spot. Jenkins made impressive progress to move up from 14th on the grid to finish fourth with Steven Armstrong (MAN) and Paul McCumisky (Volvo) completing the top six. Maclolm Dawson took the Class ‘B’ honours in his Seddon Atkinson – coming in 7th overall.
Sunday brought another crushing victory for Oliver – but there was plenty of excitement in the pack behind him. In practice Oliver had again claimed pole – but times were slightly slower on Sunday morning as his best lap in the Castrol MAN was 1m.15.934s.
Again Garrett was expected to be the nearest challenger – although Jenkins in third on the grid could also pose a threat.
The Sunday race suffered a red flag on the opening lap as two trucks went off-track in a first turn incident. When the race was finally re-started Oliver again got the jump on Garrett to head the pack – and then pulled way to win by a massive margin of over 47 seconds, again setting fastest lap of the race.
The expected challenge from ‘Rocket’ Ross soon faded – the Foden driver suffering major handling problems and being forced to make a mid-race pit-stop to make adjustments before finally retiring on lap nine.
But the battle for second place was certainly entertaining – with Paul McCumisky initially holding the position in his smart new Volvo. Late in the race he was passed by both Jenkins and Horne – the Sisu driver looking set for the runner-up spot until he missed a gear on the final lap, dropping him to third and promoting Horne to second.
Armstrong (MAN) again took fifth with Rob Gibbon (Volvo White) taking the Class ‘B’ honours and sixth overall.
For Oliver and Team Castrol Atkins a perfect start to the defence of their BTRA Championship crown… but little time for celebration as next weekend (May 15/16) it’s time for Round 3 of the FIA European Truck Racing Cup at Misano in Italy.
