MAN drivers Stuart Oliver and Lutz Bernau shared the victories in all four races held at Misano, Italy last weekend (May 15/16) – overcoming some tough opposition in the closely contested meeting in front of nearly 20,000 fans.
On Saturday it was on-form Oliver in the Castrol Atkins MAN who set the pace. During practice the British driver set a time of 1m.42.053s. (average speed 123.045 km/h) to claim ‘pole’ position for the Qualifying race. Just half a second slower was Frankie Vojtisek (Renault) with reigning champion Bernau lining up third fastest alongside the Austrian Egon Allgauer.
Oliver made good use of his starting slot to head the field into the first right hand turn with Vojtisek and Bernau hard on his heels in the early stages while Allgauer was holding off the hard-charging Czech Adam Lacko (MAN).
Setting the fastest lap of the race Oliver gradually eased clear of the opposition – finally taking the chequered flag 1.3 seconds ahead of Vojtisek and Bernau. However on the official results sheet the winning margin was extended to over 5 seconds… and it was Allgauer who took the runner-up spot with Lacko promoted to third. In the heat of battle both Vojtisek and Bernau were judged to have clipped the corner markers on several occasions – incurring 20 seconds time penalties which dropped them to fourth and fifth respectively.
The first win of the weekend put Oliver on ‘pole’ once more for the Saturday Cup race – and again he took an immediate lead and was never headed throughout the 13-lap race. Allgauer was in close contention on the first lap but was soon busy defending his position from fast-starting Vojtisek.
Oliver once again posted fastest lap (1m.42.751s.) as he pulled away and finally crossed the finish line with a winning margin of 5.211 seconds. The battle for second place proved to be more intense; Allgauer came under pressure mid-race from Bernau and Vojtisek – finally forced to give way (and eventually retire to the pits) when he suffered a broken shock absorber.
Bernau and Vojtisek were trading blows throughout the closing stages – the MAN driver finally gaining the advantage with one lap to go to claim the runner-up spot by two seconds. Lacko, who had challenged Bernau early in the race was troubled by a lack of front end grip and finally had to settle for fourth place after a very lonely race.
Fifth finally went to Jochen Hahn (Mercedes) with the Swiss MAN driver Daniel Seiler completing the top six.
“Not a bad start to the weekend” said jubilant Oliver after his second win of the day “Let’s hope we can continue the winning streak tomorrow!”
It certainly looked likely that the Englishman might be on his way to another win when practice started on Sunday morning; he clocked a best time of 1m.41.788s. (123.456km/h). But Bernau was in determined mood – the MAN technicians had worked late into Saturday evening replacing his differential and the repairs paid dividends as the German driver outpaced Oliver… by just 0.078 seconds.
The gap to third quickest Lacko was also small; just over half a second with Allgauer and Vojtisek next on the grid line-up.
Bernau and Oliver were virtually side-by-side on the charge into the first turn of the Qualy race – the reigning champ just holding onto the lead while the rest of the 17-strong field sorted themselves out.
Oliver chased his rival hard but Bernau left no gaps and with no passing opportunity had to be content with the runner-up spot, just 1.299s. down at the end of the nine lap race. Lacko claimed the final podium spot, some seven seconds adrift while Allgauer and Vojtisek disputed fourth – the Austrian finally taking the position by 1.2 seconds over his Czech challenger. Portuguese MAN driver Jose Rodrigues completed the top six.
The Sunday Cup race saw Bernau and Oliver again lining up side-by-side on the front of the grid – and from the rolling start it was clear that neither was prepared to give a centimetre. With Oliver on the outside it was almost inevitable that the Castrol MAN would be pushed slightly wide exiting the first turn – and with three wheels onto the grass Oliver did well to hold onto second place as Allgauer and Lacko tried to make up time.
Once he had his MAN pointing back in the right direction Oliver closed the gap on race leader Bernau…but the German driver still managed to maintain a slight advantage, taking the chequered flag with a winning margin of 1.42 seconds.
Some nine seconds down on the leading duo Allgauer brought his MAN in third to claim a podium position for the second time during the weekend…but he clearly wasn’t happy to be trailing the leaders!
Less than three seconds behind him was Lacko with Rodrigues and Seiler making it an all-MAN top six. Hahn had looked set to break the monopoly en route to sixth…but collected a 30-seconds overspeed penalty that dropped him to eighth.
With a total points tally of 54 points during the weekend Oliver has extended
his championship lead over Allgauer and Lacko (joint second) to 29 points. Bernau, currently in fourth, also had a successful trip to Italy – closing the gap on the pair ahead to just nine points.
Most of the teams now have the luxury of a comparatively long break of over a month before the next FIA Cup event in France.
