The fifth round of the 2004 FIA European Cup series saw reigning champion Lutz Bernau stealing the show on Saturday as he took two convincing victories – followed home in both the Qualifying and Cup races by the Castrol Atkins MAN of Stuart Oliver.
On Sunday Bernau looked set to repeat his winning performance as the MAN driver again claimed pole position in practice and charged to the chequered flag in the Qualifying race; an impressive three wins from three starts! But the final Cup race of the weekend proved to be a disaster for the German as heavy rain made the track very treacherous and he slid off after just three laps – into retirement. That left the promising young Czech driver Adam Lacko to take victory ahead of team-mate Egon Allgauer with Oliver picking up the final podium position for the second time on Sunday.
Remarkably the top three in the championship each collected a total of 44 points during the weekend – so Oliver retains a healthy 29-point advantage over both Allgauer and Lacko, while Bernau has dropped 42 behind.
The first day of action at the demanding Nogaro track in the sunny south west of France saw Lutz Bernau setting a sizzling pace in practice. With a time of 1m.59.686s. (average speed 109.366km/h) he was the only driver to break the two minute barrier, while Oliver was second quickest just 0.569s. slower. Allgauer and Lacko filled the second row on the grid with Frankie Vojtisek (Renault) the first non-MAN driver fifth fastest, some 2.8 seconds off the pace.
The start of the Saturday Qualifying race saw Bernau and Oliver heading the field away with Allgauer and Lacko running in close company in third and fourth. Setting fastest lap, Bernau gradually eased away at the front to finally take the chequered flag some 6.125s. ahead of Oliver.
Allgauer ran a strong third throughout with Lacko never really looking too threatening as he came home 7.6 seconds behind – but still well clear of fifth placed Vojtisek. Jochen Hahn (Mercedes) made good progress through the massive field of 26 starters to complete the top six.
The Saturday Cup race saw an almost identical result; Bernau again made good use of his starting slot to grab an early lead which he was never to lose. Oliver in the Castrol MAN shadowed his rival in the early stages – but Bernau again posted the fastest lap (1m.59.227s.) as he pulled clear to take the chequered flag by 9.587s.
Allgauer once again ran third throughout with Lacko a close fourth in the second of the yellow MANs. Vojtisek and Hahn were closely matched and were split by less than five seconds after 13 laps of competition, claiming fifth and sixth respectively.
A large crowd of over 26,000 created a lively atmosphere in the packed Nogaro paddock on Sunday as the teams prepared for their second day of competition.
Practice saw Saturdays double winner Bernau again setting the pace; he clocked a best time of 1m.59.325s. (109.325km/h) to claim ‘pole’ position by a comfortable margin of 1.051seconds over nearest rival Allgauer. Lacko was just 0.6secs down in third with Oliver rather disappointed with his 2m.00.985s. – slightly slower than his best effort the previous day.
"We tried some changes to suspension settings and tyre pressures this morning – but they didn’t have the desired effect!" explained the British driver.
The Sunday Qualy race saw Bernau again power away at the head of the field – with Allgauer and Oliver in close contention. But there was no stopping the on-form German who set an even quicker fastest lap (1m.59.204s) as he made full use of the clear track ahead of him and finally pulled clear to win by 7.92 seconds.
Oliver shadowed Allgauer very closely for most of the race but finally dropped back and settled for third, 2.08 seconds down on the Austrian at the flag. Lacko had an incident-free run to finish fourth – but some seven seconds behind Allgauer.
Rodrigues and Hahn finally finished fifth and sixth respectively (split by just 0.45 seconds) – but until the final lap it was Vojtisek who had been heading them, the Renault driver forced to retire 300 metres from the finishing line when a fuel pipe split!
After three dry races in warm conditions it was rather an unpleasant shock for most competitors when the sky turned grey and persistent rain started just before the final Cup race. Of course, some drivers favour these conditions and the wet track certainly changed the running order in a short period !
From the rolling start Allgauer out-gunned Bernau to get ahead into the first turn – and the Castrol-backed Austrian looked very comfortable as he soon opened up a sizeable gap over his pursuers.
Bernau was soon under pressure from Lacko while Oliver was also performing well on the slippery track. Rodrigues was holding fifth while a major battle developed between Hahn, Ross Garrett (Foden), Vincent Crozier (Renault) and Jean-Luop Fournier (Renault).
Everyone moved up a place on lap three when Bernau misjudged his braking and slid off into the gravel trap – ending his 100% success record for the weekend. With Lacko now running in a distant second place and a few more seconds’ advantage over Oliver, Allgauer looked secure at the front of the field.
But more drama was to follow as race leader Allgauer was judged to have made a jump start – and on his fifth lap received a ‘Stop & Go’ penalty… forcing him to take a detour into the pit lane.
Lacko blasted past the yellow MAN to take the lead as it headed for the pits – but Oliver only managed to catch Allgauer as he was re-joining the track, still holding a strong second place. The two ran nose-to-tail through a few corners but Allgauer again eased clear – finally heading Oliver home to take the runner-up spot with a 29 second advantage… while race winner Lacko (who also posted the fastest wet lap) enjoyed a winning margin of more than 22 seconds.
Hahn closed the gap on Oliver to under three seconds with a strong drive in the wet with the other ‘rain masters’ proving to be Jean-Loup Fournier and Crozier – bringing their Renaults home in fifth and sixth respectively after overcoming quick-starting Garrett (Foden). Vojtisek made a great drive through the field of 26 to climb from the back of the grid to 8th at the flag.
"To be honest this is not my favourite track and I was very pleased to get four podium results which help keep my lead at the top of the championship" said Team Castrol Atkins driver Oliver.
The series now moves on to the ADAC Truck GP in Germany – the biggest event of the season, which attracts an audience of 150,000 to the famous Nurburgring (July 9/10/11) – where the Castrol-supported trio of Oliver, Allgauer and Bernau will all be anxious to put in further winning performances to maintain their championship hopes.
