The ADAC International Truck Grand Prix at Nurburgring saw Lutz Bernau keeping the 173,000 crowd happy by taking his MAN to four straight wins while Stuart Oliver in the Team Castrol Atkins machine scored well throughout the weekend (July 10/11) to stay at the head of the championship.
Bernau – the reigning FIA European Cup Champion – was quickest of the MAN drivers in the first very wet practice, gaining second place on the grid, alongside Frankie Vojtisek (Renault). The other expected front-runners – Adam Lacko and Egon Allgauer – were struggling to find grip and claimed 7th and 8th places respectively on the grid while championship leader Stuart Oliver was floundering down in 13th place, 8.8 seconds off the pace.
“We had a real problem with front end grip and the balance of the truck was terrible” explained Team Manager Dave Atkins. Changing the front tyres before the next outing had the desired effect – bringing an 8-second improvement in lap times and raising expectations for the forthcoming race.
The miserable weather conditions improved to leave a mainly dry track for the actual races. The Saturday Qualifying race saw Bernau taking an immediate lead which he held right through to the chequered flag. Lacko and Allgauer quickly moved up to run in second and third – but the positions were reversed one lap from the finish when the Austrian pulled off a successful passing move.
Oliver was meanwhile making great progress, making up seven places to hold sixth at the end of the first lap. He kept up a tremendous pace, overhauling Vojtisek mid-race and finally crossing the finishing line a fabulous fourth ‘on the road’ just 0.8 sec. down on Lacko. But in the official results the Englishman was moved up to 2nd when Vojtisek and Lacko both collected 10-second overspeeding penalties – dropping them to 3rd and 5th respectively. Jose Rodrigues found himself promoted to fourth.
The Saturday Cup race brought further success for on-form Bernau – the German driver again taking a start-to-finish win with Oliver shadowing him closely for the first half of the race. But in the closing stages Oliver’s front tyres started to deteriorate seriously and he was forced to ease off and finally dropped back to finish fourth.
Lacko came under pressure from Rodrigues and finally conceded a position to the Portuguese driver near the finish… but in the process collected an overspeed penalty and found himself put back to third in the results!
Allgauer, having clashed with Vincent Crozier’s Renault on the opening lap dropped back to 14th but in a spirited drive fought his way back to fifth at the flag.
Sunday’s practice saw a much-improved Oliver really flying to set fastest lap (2m.00.422 / 108.488km/h) and claim the pole. Just 0.626s. slower was Allgauer with Bernau third, just 0.052s. behind…an all-Castrol top three on the grid for Sunday’s first outing.
From the rolling start Oliver had the inside line with Lacko making it three abreast as he squeezed between the Castrol MAN and Allgauer. But Bernau was keeping a tight line and was right on Oliver’s rear bumper – just nudging the Englishman enough to make him run wide under braking… leaving a Bernau-sized gap for him to nip through.
Oliver quickly set off on the heels of the hard-charging German but was unable to regain his lead and after nine hectic laps had to be content with the runner-up spot, just 2.03 secs. behind at the flag. Lacko ran a strong third for the opening three laps but then appeared to fade slightly as Allgauer eased ahead with no apparent difficulty – leaving the Czech to come home fourth. Rodrigues came in fifth while Jochen Hahn made good progress to bring his Mercedes home in sixth.
Tension was high as the 26-strong field lined up for the start of the final Cup race – but the leaders all emerged from the tight first corner holding their respective starting positions. But through the following sweeping left hander chaos reigned as Frenchman Noel Crozier (MAN) made contact with Lacko – both trucks spinning and leaving Allgauer with no escape. The Austrian made heavy contact with the left side of Lacko’s truck - hurting his leg and leaving his Czech colleague with concussion … and both the yellow trucks most definitely out of action.
Fortunately both Bernau and Oliver had escaped ahead of this incident – and the pair ran in close company for the entire 13 laps to come home first and second, just 2.907s apart. Rodrigues had made up a lot of ground at the start and held a strong third - but in the closing stages lost the place to the flying Hahn. The German Mercedes man had fought his way past Vojtisek on his way to his first podium for some time.
Bernau’s clean-sweep of four wins netted him the maximum possible score of 60 points in the weekend – and has promoted him to second overall in the title chase, in front of Lacko and Allgauer. But Oliver still tops the tables – holding a 25-point advantage at the mid-point of the season.

SUPERTRUCKS
ALBACETE’S AGONY…
The Nurburgring event always produces plenty of drama and excitement to entertain the enormous audience (a claimed total of 173,000 over three days this year)– and the 2004 ADAC Truck GP was no exception, even in the Supertruck class.
The timed practice session started with a damp track and was then stopped when Frenchman David Patalacci parked his DAF in the crash barriers. After a delay to recover the vehicle the remaining 20-minutes saw the circuit drying out - and the fastest laps being recorded.
Antonio Albacete finally grabbed the ‘pole’ position with a time of 1m.53.75s. (average speed 114.852km/h) in the Equipo Cepsa Buggyra. The ‘sister’ machine of Frenchman Ludovic Faure was just 0.15secs. slower with David Vrsecky completing an all-Buggyra top three, just 0.629 secs behind.
Markus Oestreich – gunning for glory in his ‘home’ event could only manage fourth fastest time in his VW Titan – but he was just 0.876s. off Albacete’s time and could be expected to push hard come the race.
Ralf Druckenmuller clocked a respectable 1m.55.165s. in the second VW – but the remainder of the field were less than competitive: Stan Matejovsky making a one-off return in his Tatra was sixth fastest (3.4 seconds off the pace) just ahead of Herve Crozier (MAN). The 2003 PAM machine of first-timer Pierre von Mentlen was an enormous 7.74 seconds behind the pole with the DAF’s of Patalcci and Bassanelli even slower.
Sunday dawned a bit drier but still very cold (around 14C) – but the on-track action was hot! The start of the Qualifying race saw Albacete power his red Buggyra into an early lead while Oestreich outgunned Vrsecky to slot into third place – right on the rear bumper of Faure.
Albacete didn’t have much of a lead – but the Spaniard seemed to have everything in control, posting fastest lap (1m.54.165s.) as he made good use of the clear track. Faure was under constant pressure from Oestreich and after three laps the German used a little ‘physical’ contact to push the Buggyra wide under braking for the hairpin corner… and slip the VW inside to take over second place.
Faure was understandably keen to return the favour – giving the rear of Oestreich’s VW enough of a shove at the next left hander to push the German slightly off-line – allowing the silver Buggyra to reverse the positions and re-take second (with some front bodywork missing!).
The duo swapped places another two times during the next lap – but finally Faure was able to consolidate his place and finally crossed the finishing line 2.127 seconds behind race winner Albacete. The gap from Faure to third placed Oestreich was just 0.811 secs. after nine hectic laps – with Vrsecky coming in fourth, 3.576 secs. behind the leading trio.
Druckenmuller brought his VW home fifth, a respectable 5.293s. behind – with Matejovsky completing the top six, trailing in over half a minute back…and the remaining five might as well have parked up for a sleep!
The Cup race looked sure to produce a similar result; Albacete in the Cepsa Buggyra again setting a sizzling pace to gradually open up a few second lead while Faure was focussed on fending off the attentions of hard-charging Oestreich.
With three laps of the 14-lap race remaining the Spanish driver looked secure with most attention looking to the scrap for the runner-up spot. But then Albacete’s engine started to go off-song – the drop in power combined with some brake troubles suddenly resulting in a race leader with no advantage over his followers.
With just one lap remaining the Spanish driver had his mirrors full of the quickly-closing Buggyra of Faure with Oestreich also shadowing closely. The corner before the pits straight saw Albacete run slightly wide and Faure grabbed the opportunity to get alongside… but unfortunately ran wide himself, shoving Albacete way off-line.
Oestreich couldn’t believe his luck –as the two Buggyra’s lost momentum and left an enormous gap on the inside for him to drive through – into a lead he certainly wasn’t going to hand back!
The VW driver finally took the chequered flag 1.916 seconds clear of Faure with an extremely angry Albacete a further 3.4 seconds back in third place. Vrsecky in fourth had to work hard to hold off Druckenmuller for fourth – just 0.826secs. splitting the pair on the line. Crozier gained sixth as Matejovsky went out (and broke his arm) when he clipped Patalacci’s DAF while lapping it!
Post-race the leaders didn’t know what to say. Oestreich had been ‘gifted’ the win while the two Buggyra drivers were blaming each other:
Albacete’s team had already advised the Faure pit crew that they had trouble and that the Spanish driver would have to relinquish the lead…but they didn’t expect to be pushed off and lose second place too!
Faure in turn claimed that Albacete had run wide and then closed the door on him, resulting in the collision. Whatever the story, Oestreich went home from the Nurburgring holding a four-point lead over Faure in the championship – more than he could have dreamed of at the start of the race!
