The Czech round of the 2004 FIA European Truck Racing Cup saw Castrol Team Atkins driver Stuart Oliver maintain a 44-point advantage over his main championship rival Lutz Bernau thanks to a double victory during the second day of competition. But on Saturday the 31,000 strong crowd had plenty to cheers about as local hero Adam Lacko collected maximum points with two wins.
SATURDAY: LOCAL LACKO LEADS!
A brief shower just before the start of the Saturday timed practice period made conditions tricky – and the grid for the first Qualifying race of the weekend had an unusual look.
On pole position was the MAN of Czech driver Adam Lacko – the teenager putting his local knowledge to good effect as he posted a fastest lap of 1m.58.608s. (125.901km/h). Ross Garrett (Foden) lined up alongside – 0.468s. slower with reigning champion Lutz Bernau (MAN) just 0.048s slower in third.
Frankie Vojtisek (Renault) was fourth fastest just ahead of Stuart Oliver in the Castrol MAN on 1m.59.190. The team felt he would have been nearer the front of the grid had he not been baulked by Egon Allgauer’s MAN for much of the session!
The time period covering second to fifth was just 0.114seconds – with a further five drivers within one second of these times. With a grid of 26 starters the scene was set for some exciting racing…
Qualifying race
From the rolling start of the Qualy race Garrett took the early advantage to lead the field through the high speed chicane – but within half a lap Lacko had charged through into the lead. Meanwhile Vojtisek has muscled his way up to third and was closing rapidly on the leaders.
Bernau and Oliver tangled in the closing stages of the first lap – the Englishman damaging a tyre and being forced to retire to the pits while Bernau had to battle his way back into the top ten.
Lap two saw Garrett running wide under pressure – allowing Vojtisek to move up to second, soon right on the tail of the race leader.
The two Czech drivers continued to circulate at an incredible pace – seldom separated by less than a couple of metres – leaving the rest of the field trailing. At the end of eight laps Lacko took the chequered flag – but only 0.194 seconds ahead of Vojtisek’s rapid Renault.
Garrett looked set for third after a tough battle with Jose Rodrigues – but the Foden driver was forced to retire two laps from the finish allowing the Portuguese MAN driver to take the remaining podium place.
A mid-race incident involving a lapped tailender forced Gerd Korber (Freightliner) and Egon Allgauer (MAN) to take to the grass – costing both a lot of time, allowing Bernau to close in an finally pass the pair for a hard-fought fourth.
Cup Race
The start of the Saturday Cup race saw Lacko again putting his pole position starting slot to good effect to power his MAN into a lead he was never to lose, pursued closely by quick-starting Bernau. Vojtisek ran a strong third – but after only a couple of laps his Renault started to blow out oil and his hopes of challenging for victory evaporated.
The big interest lay towards the back of the grid where Oliver was forced to start in the Castrol Team Atkins MAN. On the opening lap the British driver managed to force his way past no less than 12 trucks and by he end of lap 2 he was running an incredible 9th.
By mid-race the Castrol MAN had progressed even further – overhauling the Mercedes of Jochen Hahn and Niko Pulic to move into the top five. Next target for hard-charging Oliver was his Austrian rival Allgauer…and towards the end of the 11-lap race the two MAN’s were very evenly matched. At the start of the final lap Oliver made his move – bravely diving between the yellow MAN and the pit wall to grab fourth. Allgauer nearly squeezed him into the concrete wall – being partially unsighted due to the ever-increasing film of oil mist being emitted by Vojtisek’s Renault.
Despite suffering a rear tyre puncture Lacko took an emotional ‘home’ victory by a comfortable 5.362 seconds over Bernau with Vojtisek’s smoky Renault 26 seconds adrift. But race officials had noted the problem with the truck – displaying a black and orange warning flag to the Czech driver on three occasions. Post-race they controversially decided to disqualify Vojitsek… which promoted Oliver to third.

SUNDAY: DOUBLE WIN FOR ON-FORM OLIVER
Gerd Korber again demonstrated the potential of the new Freightliner on Sunday, setting fastest lap of 1m.58.528s. (125.986) – but Oliver was second quickest in the Castrol MAN 0.563s slower. Allgauer and Bernau lined up in third and fifth respectively with Garrett’s Foden splitting the MANs. The Czech pair of Vojtisek and Lacko were down in sixth and seventh on the grid.
Qualifying Race
Oliver showed the superior getaway power of the MAN to outgun Korber at the start and once in front powered the Castrol Team Atkins MAN to a dominant win – heading home Korber by 1.671s in the eight lap Qualy race.
Garrett ran a strong third throughout (finally finishing 2.7 seconds down on the leaders).
“As Korber is not registered for the championship I didn’t actually need to beat him to score top points – but taking first place was important for the grid position in the Cup race…and it was useful to have him between me and chasing pack” explained Oliver after his win.
The real battle was behind the first trio – Allgauer initially holding fourth but losing out in a fight with hard-charging Bernau and Vojtisek, which relegated the Austrian to sixth. Reigning Champ Bernau showed his raw speed by setting the fastest lap while the Saturday victor Adam Lacko eventually overcame Rodrigues to move up to seventh at the flag.
Cup Race
The final race of the day started with a buzz of excitement as Gerd Korber in the Czech-built Freightliner was alongside Oliver’s Castrol MAN. From the rolling start it was clear that Korber was determined to try and deny Oliver a double victory – and the two trucks arrived at the high speed chicane virtually door-to-door. Despite having no place to go Korber refused to back off, took to the grass with all six wheels and effectively straightlined the chicane – to finally just get his nose ahead of Oliver.
But Stuart wasn’t about to give in and for the next four laps chased hard after the Freightliner, posting fastest lap of the race at 1m.59.056s (125.427km/h). Finally he didn’t need to mount an overtaking manoeuvre as race officials having reviewed Korber’s chicane move decided to impose a Stop & Go penalty which removed him from the competition.
That left Oliver out in front while Bernau in second place was busy trying to defend his position from Garrett. While Oliver maintained a consistently quick pace to finally take the chequered flag by a winning margin of 8.8 seconds the battle for the runner-up spot wasn’t resolved until the final lap.
Bernau came upon a group of backmarkers and just as he was preparing to overtake one of them lost control and spun. Lutz had to take avoiding action and swerved into the gravel trap – losing several seconds and allowing Garrett to grab second place by 3.8 seconds.
Lacko was unable to repeat his winning performance of the previous day and was actually lucky to hold on for fourth place (6 seconds down on Bernau) – as he had a queue of drivers shadowing him all the way to the flag. Vojtisek finally grabbed fifth with a disappointed Allgauer completing the top six – thereby dropping to fourth in the championship standings, 9 points behind Lacko.
“Everything went to plan today and it’s great to still be holding the same advantage over Lutz, despite a few problems on Saturday” explained Oliver. “Hopefully we can continue winning in Zolder to bring that European title a bit closer”.
