The action-packed ninth round of the 2004 FIA European Cup series saw Castrol-supported drivers winning all four races – in front of a noisy and enthusiastic crowd of 38,000.
Brilliant sunshine and high temperatures seemed to suit Lutz Bernau – the MAN driver winning the first Qualifying race of the weekend and the final Sunday Cup outing, thereby closing to within 21 points of championship leader Stuart Oliver.
Oliver took a win in the Sunday Qualifying race while the Saturday Cup race brought glory for Frankie Vojtisek in his rapid Renault.
The Saturday practice session saw Lutz Bernau claiming pole position with a best time of 2m.03.871s. (111.891km/h) – with Stuart Oliver in the Castrol Team Atkins MAN lining up second quickest, 0516s. slower.
The third of the Castrol-supported MAN drivers, Egon Allgauer, was just 0.088s behind Oliver with Frankie Vojtisek (Renault) completing the top four… the Czech driver only 0.065s down on Allgauer. Ross Garrett (Foden) and Adam Lacko (MAN) completed the top six.
However, lining up for the start of the Saturday Qualifying race Oliver suddenly found himself re-positioned in 5th place on the grid. It seems officials had penalised him for clipping a cone during practice – but instead of deleting that individual lap time they had taken away his best lap! Both driver and Team Manager Dave Atkins were furious – but with the race about to start they were unable to argue against this error.
Bernau put his pole position to good use – heading the massive field of 35 starters away – and holding off Allgauer through the first turn. The Austrian pushed hard throughout but finally came home 1.134s. behind while Garrett held off Vojtisek for third. Oliver, suffering from grabbing brakes and admitting that the last-minute startline confusion had “done my head in” successfully fended off Lacko to finish fifth.
The Saturday Cup race saw Bernau out in front again – but Vojtisek was really charging and ran a strong second ahead of fellow Czech driver Lacko while Garrett went wide, allowing Oliver to initially run fourth.
But this race had plenty of overtaking action as Lacko outbraked himself to drop to sixth while Garrett fought his way ahead of Oliver to run third. At the front Vojtisek closed in and soon found a way ahead of Bernau – the Castrol-supported Renault driver then pulling clear to win by a comfortable 8.75 seconds.
With the leaders soon coming into heavy traffic as they lapped backmarkers, Bernau now had his mirrors full of Foden as Garrett sought to improve his place – but the English drivers’ challenge faded and he finally fell way back to 20th with a throttle problem.
Oliver lost one place to the hard-charging Jose Rodrigues – and Garrett’s demise then allowed the young Portuguese driver to claim third. Oliver finally brought the Castrol Atkins MAN home in fourth place – four seconds clear of a fierce battle for fifth between Lacko and Mercedes driver Jochen Hahn.
Bernau’s two podium finishes on the first day had allowed him to reduce Oliver’s championship advantage, so it was no surprise to find the Castrol Atkins team working late on Saturday night, checking their truck and seeking to improve the performance.
A slightly deformed intercooler connection was discovered, which would have cost some boost pressure and response times – so with repairs in place it was good to see Oliver secure pole position on Sunday morning!
The Castrol MAN driver clocked a best time of 2m.04.154s. (111.636km/h) – but Bernau was almost matching him, just 0.171s. slower. Completing an all-MAN top three was Allgauer with Vojtiseck alongside him on row two.
The start produced the usual scramble for positions at the first right turn; Oliver and Allgauer emerged at the front while Bernau and Vojtiseck both ran wide onto the gravel traps and dropped out of the top ten. That allowed Garrett to move up to third while Rodrigues and Lacko disputed fourth position.
By the end of lap two Lacko had moved ahead of his Portuguese rival while Vojtiseck and Bernau had progressed well; up to 6th and 7th respectively.
Oliver looked reasonably secure at the front of the field – especially when Allgauer’s challenge faded, the Austrian dropping back to 7th, thanks to a broken shock absorber. That allowed Garrett through into second – so Oliver finally came home to take the chequered flag 1.971s. clear of his fellow Englishman.
Lacko had a clear run through for the final podium place – while a determined Bernau (posting fastest lap) overhauled Vojtiseck and Rodrigues to come home a fighting fourth, just 1.5 seconds behind the young Czech driver. Jochen Hahn (Mercedes) completed the top six.
The final race of the weekend saw Oliver again powering away at the start in the Castrol MAN while Bernau made an impressive getaway to slot in second, while Garrett, Allgauer and Lacko were battling for third.
Bernau once again posted fastest lap – and rapidly closed in on Oliver…. making a bold passing move right in front of the packed grandstand area on the second lap. Oliver, perhaps wisely, ran slightly wide – and his German rival grabbed the opportunity to dive inside and take over the lead.
“He came up behind so fast I thought it was clear that if I didn’t leave some space for him we would have collided” explained Oliver afterwards.
“I figured that at this crucial stage of the season a second place finish would be better than going off!”.
Nevertheless, once Bernau got ahead he hardly had any chance to relax – as Oliver shadowed him throughout the 12-lap race, the pair finally separated by just 1.95 seconds after over 25 minutes of close combat!
Garrett ran third throughout (some 3 seconds adrift) – but he had to fend off the chasing pack. Allgauer held on to 4th, just ahead of Lacko with Hahn and Vojtiseck completing the top ten.
Post-race there was some heated discussions regarding an alleged overspeeding offence – which saw Dave Atkins being forced to lodge a protest. But finally the results stood as they crossed the finishing line.
“Eventually not such a bad day’s work” explained Atkins. “Stuart had a win and a second place today and still tops the tables – and I got my money back after successfully challenging the system!”.
With just the final round of the European Cup at Le Mans remaining, Oliver is 21 points ahead of reigning champion Bernau, who obviously is not going to give up his crown without a fight. Also, with only 11 points splitting third placed Lacko and Allgauer that place is still wide open – so with 60 points still up for grabs the French finale is sure to be a thriller!

SUPERTRUCKS
MARKUS IS THE MAN IN MADRID
OESTREICH HOLDS OFF FAURE TO GO 17 POINTS CLEAR
The Supertruck category saw another dominant performance by Markus Oestreich – the VW driver taking two wins to extend his championship lead.
In practice it was Oestreich who claimed ‘pole’ position with a best time of 1m.56.161s. (average speed 119.318km/h) – with his championship rival Ludovic Faure just 0.036s slower on the official timesheets. But the positions were very nearly reversed; Buggyra driver Faure clocked an even quicker time in the final moments of the practice session – only to have the time annulled for allegedly clipping corner markers!
The second row of the starting grid saw the Buggyra pair Antonio Albacete and David Vrsecky side-by-side; local hero Albacete 0.639s slower than Faure while Vrsecky was 0.308s down on the Spaniard.
At the start of the Qualifying race it appeared that Vrsecky ‘anticipated’ the green light considerably sooner than everyone else; the Czech driver was way out in front just metres after the startline with Albacete in hot pursuit while Oestreich and Faure were left trailing!
However, Vrsecky’s moment of glory was short-lived – the young Czech driver receiving a black flag obliging him to take a Stop & Go penalty for jumping the start. So at the end of his second lap he had dropped down the running order to sixth!
Albacete therefore inherited the lead – but with a lack of power he soon came under pressure from Oestreich and was pushed wide… allowing both the VW driver and Faure to get ahead.
Oestreich then held the lead all the way to the flag while Faure, despite clocking fastest lap (1m.56.678s), had to be content with second place, 2.963s behind at the flag.
Albacete started to come under pressure from Ralf Druckenmuller (VW) mid-race and his third place looked to be under threat for a while – until Druckenmuller was forced to take a Stop & Go Penalty, for clipping too many corners!
That allowed Albacete to take an untroubled third while Vrsecky moved up to 4th, some 20 seconds behind, but 11 seconds clear of recovering Druckenmuller. Maurice Monfrino (MAN) held off the DAF duo Bassenelli and Patalacci to claim sixth.
CUP RACE: ON-FORM OESTRECH AGAIN
The Cup race failed to provide any real excitement – with even the rolling start proceeding without incident and no change of position.
Oestreich got the nose his yellow VW in front at the first turn – and for the next 13 laps could only see the chasing Buggyras in his rear-view mirrors. Oestreich clocked fastest lap (1m.56.903s) and eased clear to take the chequered flag some 4.413s. clear of runner-up Faure.
Albacete couldn’t run with the leaders and spent most of the race defending his third place from the ever-improving Druckenmuller – the VW driver crossing the finishing line just 0.56s adrift.
Vrsecky again had a day to forget; he started and finished fifth – having a lonely run through to the finish, six seconds down on Druckenmuller. Monfrino again came in a distant sixth – 1minute 22 seconds behind his nearest rival, but still 21 seconds ahead of Patalacci’s DAF.
Oestreich heads off for the final round of the European Cup holding a 13-point lead over Faure. But with 30 points still available and the Frenchman racing on home ground the German driver still can’t afford to relax!
