The dinner and dance in the evening was very well attended and it was a particular pleasure to see some faces from the past. Reg Hopkins, Richard Walker, Tim Baddiley and Kaz Driver (formerly Garnett) represented the earliest days of truck racing with, of course, Tony Jenkins. It was also a pleasure to be joined by Conrad Thompson and Roy Clarke, who have been off the track for a shorter length of time, and by Maurice Monfrino.
The trophies for British Champion, runner up and third place in both classes were presented by Richard Walker to Stuart Oliver, Steve Horne, Stephen Armstrong, Rob Gibbon, Max Dawson and Roy Taylor respectively.
Stuart also received the Neil Fuller Trophy for the most points in the British Championship and he and his team were awarded the Terry Crossland Trophy for the Best British Team in Europe which were presented by Dale Wells.
Rob Gibbon picked up the award for the Most Improved Driver and the Rookie of the Year award was collected by Gary George.
Reg Hopkins was asked to present the trophy for Crasher of the Year and, after reminding everyone that he had received the trophy himself in the past, awarded the trophy to his son, Philip, for the incident in Dave Jenkins’ truck in the Pembrey Challenge race in October.
There were two Unsung Hero awards this year, presented to Jane Horne and Sandra Armstrong for all the work they had put in on the BTRA Promotional Trailer over the year.
Stuart presented the Chairman’s award for Services to the Sport to Martyn Soames who has worked tirelessly throughout the year on the Trailer, in the Pace Truck, organising the paddocks and on the Committee.
Terry Cox presented the Smart Arse of the Year award to Dale Wells for his undercover work at Pembrey in October. Drivers had been warned – not for the first time - against corner-cutting and during racing Dale could be found positioned behind barriers around the circuit, popping up to spot the culprits.
In recognition of the efforts he has made to promote the sport and for his work on the Committee for many years Roy Clarke was awarded lifetime membership of the association.
Paul McCumisky presented to Stuart a picture of his truck which had been signed by all the drivers to congratulate him on winning the European Championship.
With the serious business of the evening concluded and the wine flowing the microphone passed to Paul McCumisky, Max Dawson, Roger Brookfield and Dale Wells who had a few presentations of their own to make.
Cliffy Keith, Steve Fell’s mechanic, was presented with the ‘Golden Gear Award’. Max felt that Steve’s performance suggested that he had only 7½ gears and the award was designed to help Cliffy to get him up to top speed.
Following his accident earlier in the year when he was hit in the face by a jack Max was presented with a broken jack - Paul McCumisky felt that this way he was less likely to do himself an injury.
Dave Jenkins’ gift from Roger Brookfield was a turbo because of the number he had blown during the season.
Mat Summerfield was presented with the tyres that had become lodged in his front grille in Most, earning him the nickname rubber lips, which had been brought back to the UK by Steve Armstrong and were presented by Paul McCumisky.
Stuart Oliver was given a gift of a packet of donuts by Dale Wells as a memento of October’s Pembrey meeting – Stuart celebrated his victory with a few donuts but drivers had been told at their briefing that they were not allowed. Stuarts celebrations resulted in a fine of £100 – and a collection bucket by his truck with a notice asking for contributions as he has a family and car to support!
