The opening round of the 2005 FIA European Truck Racing Cup brought some encouraging results for Markus Boesiger in his debut drive for Team Castrol Atkins.
The Swiss driver was pleased to take 5th place and 6th place finishes in the two races on Saturday followed by a brilliant second in Sunday’s Qualifying race and a fine fourth in the Cup race.
The Saturday Cup race saw a strong performance from Boesiger to take sixth while Czech youngster David Vrsecky won from pole, just 1.619 seconds ahead of the Castrol-backed Austrian Allgauer (MAN).
Sunday practice saw Boesiger demonstrating that in his two years away from the sport he had lost none of his impressive ‘flying lap’ technique as he powered the Castrol MAN to a best lap of 1m.32.762s (118.30 km/h), good enough for fourth position on the starting grid, one place ahead of Allgauer.
Albacete took off like a rocket at the start of the Qualifying race to take a popular win in his ‘home’ event with Boesiger second.
Allgauer was pushing hard in third place – and was soon right on the rear bumper of Boesiger’s silver and green machine, but after two concerted efforts that saw Bosiger defend well Allgauer found himself on the grass and lost position to both Boesiger and the following Frankie Vojtisek!
The final outing of the weekend brought another win for Albacete. Vojtisek and Allgauer outgunned Bosiger at the rolling start and then sandwiched him into the first turn, squeezing the Castrol MAN so hard that a corner of the front bumper was removed…and he dropped to fourth with Allgauer soon passing Vojtisek to take second.
Boesiger ended the day 4th overall in the points standings: “The team is working well and we’re making good progress every time we get out on the track. The ‘feel’ of the Castrol MAN Racetruck is pretty good and I’m sure we’ve got winning potential here!”
Team Manager David Atkins was satisfied with the final result but admitted that the team were still searching to cure the mystery of the intermittent drop in engine power that had plagued the Castrol MAN all weekend.
“We’re working hard to find the problem; without that handicap I’m confident Markus could have been on the podium in all four races here in Spain”.
The next event is the Dutch round at Assen on May 8th.
