Over the weekend of August 5th/6th Team Oliver was at the Thruxton circuit to participate in a weekend of truck racing events, including rounds 6 and 7 of the British Championship. The warm and dry weather made for good racing conditions on the track, and also helped to attract a good crowd of spectators who were out to enjoy a varied programme of both truck and car racing.
After the late morning qualifier on the Saturday which placed Stuart’s MAN third on the starting grid, the team had several hours to make last minute adjustments to the truck before the round 6 race which took place at the end of the day. Ross Garrett in the Foden, having started second on the grid, took the lead in the first lap and held onto it throughout the race. Behind him, the real competition was between Dave Jenkins in the Sisu who then held onto the second position to the end, Mat Summerfield in the other Sisu, Steve Horne in the ERF and of course, Stuart himself.
Summerfield was hit in lap 6 by Horne and then again soon after by Levett in the MAN, all of which led to a switching of positions. However, Stuart steered clear of all this excitement and retained his third position to the finishing line. Stuart’s personal best lap in this race was the eighth and final one which he completed in 1:40.831 at a speed of 84.11m.p.h.
With the first day of racing over and some adjustments made to the truck, it was time for Stuart, and mechanics Ian and Michael to relax. The boys were seen enjoying the hospitality of former driver Cornel Day and his wife Sandra, having partaken of a delicious meal of curry and rice pudding which had been cooked by another former driver, affectionately known as ‘Sizzler’. All of this was washed down by generous amounts of beer in the party atmosphere of the whole paddock area.
It was an early wake-up call for the lads on Sunday with the round 7 race of the British Championship starting at 9a.m. Grid positions were taken from the finishing order of the previous round which meant that Stuart started in third place. Ross Garrett had started in pole position this time and held the lead to the chequered flag. Stuart got off to a flying start and by the end of the first lap had pulled forward into second place. However, in the next lap he was overtaken by Jenkins who remained in that position to the finish. Thus it was that Stuart stayed in third position for the rest of the seven lap race to take the final place on the winner’s podium. Stuart’s personal best lap time on this occasion was again for the final one which he completed in a time of 11:49.506 at a speed of 83.68m.p.h.
In both the British Championship races the truck performed well with many of the gremlins which had haunted it earlier in the season sorted out. Mechanics Ian and Michael certainly worked tirelessly over the weekend to ensure that the truck gave its best performance. Stuart now lies in fifth position on the British Championship table with 46 points and hopes to be a strong contender for the rest of the season.
The MAN truck in its smart livery, new for this season, was one of the main attractions in the paddock area, and Stuart was on hand to chat to visitors and to sign autographs. Stuart was delighted that Nick Hayes, Alistair Milne and Trevor Holliday from sponsors TurboChip were able to come to Thruxton for the weekend. Their input into the performance of the truck whilst it was actually participating in a race meeting was invaluable.
It was also good to see Team Oliver driver Stephen ‘Stretch’ Armstrong who came along to catch up with all the lads for the weekend and soak up some of that truck racing buzz.
Stuart also participated in the International Challenge which was the culmination of the whole event and brought the British drivers together with four teams who had travelled from France to take part. Heats were necessary to reduce the number of contestants down to the maximum grid number of twenty and Stuart completed his to achieve fifth position on the grid. The race was fast and furious with some of the closest bumper to bumper and four abreast racing seen all weekend! Assertive holding of the race line in lap 3 by Stuart resulted in damage to the nearside rear tyre of the MAN and the retirement of Mat Summerfield in the Sisu. In the following lap, Stuart was forced to withdraw after some exciting and crowd pleasing contact with Dave Jenkins in the other Sisu resulted in extreme deterioration of the tyre damage. Thus it was that Stuart failed complete the race which was won by Ross Garrett who lifted the International trophy for the fifth British victory in the series.
Despite a disappointing end, overall it was a good weekend’s racing for Stuart and Team Oliver. They are looking forward to the next British Championship meeting to be held at Pembrey in October.
