FIA European Truck Racing Cup, Round 3 – Albacete, Spain
Stuart Oliver consolidates his eighth place Championship position.
Stuart Oliver gained a valuable 24 points with 6th and 5th place finishes in the two Cup races to consolidate his Championship position.
With almost cloudless skies and temperatures of 30 degrees (42 degrees on the track!), 20,000 Spanish fans enjoyed a great weekend of racing at the Circuito de Albacete.
Hoping for trouble free racing after Zolder’s problems, apart from a minor oil leak, Stuart Oliver and the Team were not disappointed!
Stuart set a 4th fastest lap in qualifying on Saturday giving him a strong grid position for the first race.
In the opener race there was mayhem on the first corner when the Freightliner of David Vrsecky and the MANs of Gerd Korber and Egon Allgauer made contact causing them to leave the track and creating a giant plume of dust.
Stuart found a hole through the confusion to continue but fellow Brit Chris Levett could do little to steer the Birds MAN into the crash barriers.
The delay at the first corner left Stuart chasing the leading drivers but a sixth place finish against strong competition was a good start to the first day's racing.
The Spaniard Antonio Albacete sent the home crowds to their feet with a win in his MAN.
Sunday’s qualifying race saw Stuart achieving an eighth place on the grid.
The race started in fury with the Spaniard Albacete taking away Freightliner driver Bösiger’s grid lead at the start. However Bösiger locked up at the first corner, crashed into Albacete and sent him into a 180 degree spin. The pack dodged the spinning Albacete going left and right wide of the track.
Stuart gained valuable places up the field and for much of the race battled and held his position against the Freightliners and the Merc driven by Hochen Hahn. Leader Bösiger was penalised with a drive-through-penalty because of the incident with Albacete and fell back to 8th position.
Stuart held onto fourth place with Albacete behind having advanced up the field closely followed by Bösiger. Three laps before the chequered flag Albacete managed to pass Stuart.
Bösiger, found it tough to get past Stuart and was unsuccessful as Stuart valiantly held onto 5th place to finish a competitive and satisfying weekend racing in Spain.
