:: Stuart Oliver wins International Truck Challange
::
Torrential rain and floods hit the South of England as teams made their way to the Thruxton rounds of the Delphi British Truck Racing Championship.
Whilst the journey was slow for many this did not deter twenty British teams together with teams from France, Germany and Holland from making the grid for qualifying on the Saturday morning.
The weekend’s racing included two rounds of the Delphi Championship sponsored by Merlin Diesel Systems and the International Truck Challenge.
The damp track conditions reduced the advantage of many of the higher powered trucks as the issue became one of getting the power through the tyres to the track and holding a smooth race line.
Dave Jenkins in the SISU SL250 took pole with a .025 second advantage over current Championship leader Stuart Oliver with Chris Levett and Mat Summerfield all in MAN’s making up the first four grid positions. Class B racers Graham Powell (Ford Cargo) and Adam Atkins in the White Road Boss took Class B pole respectively.
The first Championship race of the weekend proved to be one of the most exciting of the season with the front runners led by the Jenkins SISU holding control of their trucks on the limit in wet conditions. Summerfield followed by Oliver appeared to be closing on Jenkins at times but he held them off until the chequered flag.
The first three home finished within 0.873 of a second of each other. Just behind the leaders Steve Horne (ERF) kept in touch to take fourth place after some tussles with Andy Levett (MAN) during the race. Steve’s speed control was creating issues for him over the weekend causing him to be given with two penalties for over speeding.
On Sunday the sun shone and the crowds packed into Thruxton!
The second of the weekend’s Championship races took the grid positions from the results of Saturday’s race. With Dave Jenkins and Mat Summerfield on the front row and Stuart Oliver and Steve Horne on second it was guaranteed to be an action packed race in now dry conditions.
Fans didn’t have to wait long… Just after the green light Jenkins and Summerfield were side by side with a determined Stuart Oliver trying to find an opening and Chris Levett soon along side Steve Horne.
Matt Summerfield turned in to take the corner and spun into the path of Dave Jenkins. Mat ended up on the grass and had to wait for the traffic to pass before rejoining the field and Jenkins dropped to fourth.
Steve Horne (ERF) and Andy Levett (MAN) found a clear way through the jam and took the lead in front of Stuart Oliver
Steve Horne took the lead at one point nearly three seconds ahead of Oliver, but the dry track helped Oliver take the lead in the the fifth lap with Chris Levett who took fastest lap again, following Stuart with some great driving from a sixth place first lap position. Chris’ dad Andy was amongst the front runners and took the third place slot from Steve Horne on the sixth lap.
International Truck Challenge
Stuart Oliver won the final of the International race chased by fellow MAN driver Chris Levett and Dave Jenkins (SISU) with just over a second separating them. The race was concluded on the fifth lap with a red flag stoppage when Roger Brookfield (ERF) crashed into the tyre wall at the chicane after Andrew Lovenberry (SISU) squeezed Roger off the racing line. Frenchman Oliver Robineau (MAN) was the first international driver in sixth with the Scania of Dutchman Cees Zandbergen in eighth position.
The next Delphi British Truck Racing Championship rounds will held at Pembrey on 20/21 October.
