The forth round of the European Truck Racing Championship attracted a crowd of about 32,000 to Circuit Paul Armagnac at Nogaro in the South of France
The weather Nogaro was hot and sunny. At the start for the Qualification race Spaniard Antonio Albacete in a MAN and Swiss driver Marckus Bösiger driving a Freightliner were neck and neck at the first left turn. The Spaniard who drove on the inner line could not make good use of the fact. following there was a double right bend. Bösiger was in a more advantageous position, he took the lead and this gave him victory.
David Vrsecky also in a Freightliner was now close behind Albacete, challenging the Spaniard for 8 laps. But the experienced MAN driver held off every attack and crossed the line on 2nd.
German driver Jochen Hahn (MAN) was unchallenged in fourth place, ahead of Stuart Oliver also driving a MAN now running on new rear tyres improved his lap time markedly.
Spaniard Javier Mariezcurrena three laps before the finish ploughed into the wall. The driver’s cab of his MAN truck was severely damaged. It’s was suspected that Mariezcurrena suffered a fractured shoulder, but was able to watch the final race as onlooker.
The European Truck Racing Championship race saw an outstanding performance by Marckus Bösiger, who had managed to pull away from Spaniard Antonio Albacete and Czech David Vrsecky right at the start.
Behind them there were fierce battles going on involving Hahn, Belloc and Oliver, as well as Lachèze, Allgäuer and Janiec.
When Allgäuer braked in one of the many 90 degree hairpin bends of the Circuit de Nogaro, he hit the rear of Lachèze’s truck fiercely, sending Frenchman into the gravel where he got stuck, unable to get back onto the track for a couple of laps then level with Oliver.
Vrsecky was constantly attacking Albacete in front of him. Suddenly Bösiger in the 8th lap slowed to a crawl and stopped. An air hose had come loose, making it impossible for Bösiger to use the clutch. Now it was up to Vrsecky to score a victory. But again Albacete demonstrated all his skill, but Vrsecky never had a real chance to overtake him.
Stuart Oliver finished in fifth place leading many of the major European teams. The team improving performance strengthens thier position in both the British and European Championship.
Vrsecky’s lead in the overall standing was reduced, with 182 points he is now 2 points ahead of Albacete (180), followed by Bösiger (162), Hahn (125), Belloc (116), and Oliver (79).
Next event on the FIA calendar is the ADAC International Truck GP at Nurburgring on July 11/12/13 – traditionally the showcase event of the heavyweight racing season. All the major teams will be making an extra effort to boost their performance for the big German race and for the British teams it will be a busy weekend as it also features two rounds of the Delphi British Championship where Stuart Oliver holds a clear lead.
